Wedding Cake Card

It’s wedding season, well at least near the end of wedding season and we have a fun and easy wedding cake card that is inspired by the Brusters Wedding Cake ice cream flavour. We have made a similar card like this in the past but have never blogged about it. We’re making two versions, a simple rustic one and one that’s more elegant and colourful. You don’t need fancy machines for this card and you don’t even need to stamp!

Gather some supplies to get started. You’ll need some cardstock. For our rustic card, we’ve gone with a cream coloured “cake” and greens and red for the rest of the card. For the more elegant card, we chose a white “cake” and then blue and a pinky purple colour.

We’ve cut the cards to the usual 6 ¾ x 4 ¾ inch size.

Then we have layers measuring 6 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches.

Then we cut out our cake tiers. The top is 1 ½ x 2, the middle is 2 ¼ x 2 ¼, and the bottom tier is 3 ¼ x 2. If you have a machine like a Silhouette then feel free to use it to do your cutting.

Next we glued the layers on overlapping them while doing so and then glued that layer onto our cards.

Lastly, to elevate the cards a bit, we added some embellishments. Feel free to make it as elaborate as you want and you can add some stamping, ribbon, embellishments, etc. whatever you like. We started with ribbon on both.

On the more elegant colourful card we added a bow topper on top along with simple white sparkly flower embellishments.

On our rustic simple card we added a ribbon bow on top and matching thin brown ribbon between the tiers of the cake. We left it at that to keep it simple as possible but it still has a finished feel.

There you have it, two really simple to make wedding cake cards.

Painted Terra Cotta Pots and Garden Markers

It must be true what they say about April showers because today is a rainy April day. The sun’s been out for the most part of the week, but today has been a rainy Friday. In preparation for the sunny Spring days ahead, we are doing a craft that you can use to display your herbs and flowers. We are going to paint terra cotta pots and make garden/plant markers.

It’s actually a super relaxing and fun craft to do. I’ve painted them at birthday parties and have painted a bunch and used them as party favours (kinda like a basket filled with treats and wrapped in cellophane).

First off you’ll want to go to your local garden center and pick out some terra cotta pots. We chose a few smaller sizes, but you can get really big ones too if that’s what you want. Or you can get a nice variety of sizes.

Then pick some paint (from our many crafting adventures, we had lots of paints and brushes/sponges leftover to use).

Make sure you cover your workspace with some newspaper or an old table cloth as it can be a bit messy at times to paint these. You’ll also want to make sure you have some paper towels on hand, painters tape, and paper plates.

You can just go for it or carefully plan out your design. I will admit I started doing one and then completely changed it after not liking the way it looked. I free handed mine, whereas Nicole taped out her design on the larger pot she painted. I’ve also painted ones with scenes on them

For my little pot, I had a grey theme. I mixed some blues together for the main part and then painted on grey and blue hearts. I did it freestyle so they’re not perfect. I wanted to do a bright and colourful theme for my larger pot so I used pink, orange, purple, and blue and just did a couple of sizes of polka dots on it using circular sponges.

Nicole did a very geometrical purple and white design on her larger pot. After painting the pot completely white, she used painters tape and laid out her design and sponged on the purple. For her little pot, she went with an earthy theme and used paper towel to make it have a spongy effect.

It’s important to let your pots dry for a few days before touching them or taking off any tape. Once they look the way you want them to, you can spray them with a protective coating so they can withstand the elements outside.

Another fun thing we thought we’d do is make little garden markers to go in the pots. They are simple to make and handy to have to mark the flowers and herbs that you plant.

For these you will need larger wooden sticks, paint, felts, and 3D sticky letters.

First of all, paint the sticks. You can make them match the pots or do whatever design you want. After they are dry, you use a marker to write on them or you can use 3D sticky letters. We found some bright foamy ones that we decided to try out. Then you can spell out your herbs and flowers.

Crafty Springtime Flower

We are kicking April off with a new theme...Spring. This month we are going to do crafts and make treats all with Spring in mind.

Today we are making a really simple and cute kids flower craft. This is perfect for a Mother’s Day gift or for a decoration around the house to bring in the Spring.

You need just a few easy to find things like scissors, a green straw (we used the hard fancy kind with polka dots), glue or glue tape, a few sheets of construction paper in the colour you want your flower to be, some yellow construction paper for the centre, hot glue, and tape if you want it.

First of all cut your centre out of yellow construction paper, about a 2 inch circle or you can punch one if you have a punch that size.

Then cut your “petals.” We chose pink and we used our leftover card strips so we didn’t have to cut. Roughly make these strips 6 ¾ inches x ¾ inches. You’ll need about 16 strips per flower.

Glue the ends of the strips together, so they kinda look like teardrops.

Once the “petals” are ready, start gluing them to the back of the yellow circle like this...

Then keep gluing them at 90 degree angles, then in between each other until all of the strips are used up and your flower looks full.

Hot glue the straw to the back and if you want, you can secure it with clear tape or some fancy decorated tape.

Now you have a beautiful Spring flower that you can keep forever!

Oscar Dress Card 2018!

Ok, so today is one of our most favourite posts of the year, yes today is Oscar dress card day. As you know from years past, we love taking our favourite dress worn at the Oscars and making it into a card. There are always so many beautiful dresses/outfits worn so it can be a difficult task, but we go through all of the dresses and look for one that inspires us and we create our version of it in card form. First of all though, we are going to count down our top 10 dresses. Some were quite close in the running for Oscar dress card of the year, so take a look at all these beautiful dresses and then take a look at our number one choice and the card we created. 

Our Oscar Top 10 Dresses, 2018: 

10. Ashley Judd – This dress is a very simple plum coloured strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline. Perfect if you want a simple classic look.

9. Allison Janney – This is simple yet not so simple dress. There isn’t a lot of bling or beading to it. It’s a plain red dress, yet it’s so elegant. The sleeves are what make this dress wow and stand out. Her sleeves are floor length with large slits for her arms to come out of. It’s almost like a shawl cape. I’ve never seen anything like it. 

8. Margot Robbie – There were a lot of classic white dresses this year. This one has some really pretty beading at the bodice. It could even be worn as a wedding dress. 

7. Leslie Mann – This is a princess gown dress. The red ball gown has a delicate flower pattern all throughout the dress. You don’t notice it right away because it’s in a shade that is very close to the dress colour. 

6. Molly Sims – Ok, so I LOVE this gown. It’s purplish silver with sparkly beads and a slit. I absolutely love the sleeves as well. 

5. Jennifer Lawrence/Gal Gadot –Metallic shimmery dresses were also another popular pick this year. These two stood out. Plus, it’s Wonder Woman! 

4. Helen Mirren – Again, this deep blue gown was so simple and sophisticated. The blue necklace is a nice touch to make this simple dress very elegant and chic. 

3. Allison Williams –This dress was a top pick for us and was almost our Oscar card. It is a nude blushy colour with cap sleeves, a puffy skirt, and really gorgeous intricate beading on the bodice. Again, this could be a perfect pick for a summer time wedding. 

2. Jennifer Garner – Some say it’s purple, some say it’s blue, but this is a stunning dress and colour. It especially looks nice with the dark brown hair that Jennifer Garner has. The one shoulder style is very flattering and the long flowy train makes it such a delicate Goddess like dress. 

1. Greta Gerwig – Ok, so our number one dress is this absolutely gorgeous canary yellow gown that Greta Gerwig, who was nominated for Best Director, wore. It’s a very straight sheath style gown with a v-neck and spaghetti straps, and it has these very dainty pretty flowers all over that had sparkles in them. The colour suited her perfectly; a very vibrant bright splash of colour. To top it all off, she finished the gown with a statement style necklace. Beautifully perfect!
