Oscar Dress Card 2020

It is that time once again...it’s Oscar dress card time! We absolutely love this post every single year. I’m watching the Oscars now more to look at the dresses and to pick our top ones to make a card from! After looking through many many dresses, take a look at our top 10 and then take a look at the dress we chose to inspire a card this year!

10. Brie Larson - We’re starting with sparkle here. Brie Larson seems to always make our list (her blue Oscar dress a few years back was chosen for our Oscar card  (http://paperwhitecreations.blogspot.com/2016/03/oscar-dresses-and-card.html) and this year is no different. The cape, the sparkle stripes, and the slit all makes for a perfect gown. Even the pale pink colour is perfect!

9.  Greta Gerwig – Simple and poufy, this dress is just enough. The olive green colour is something that is also very different and helps to make this dress stand out. The quaint little bow on the bodice is a perfect little detail as well.

8. Penelope Cruz – We liked this short little black high-low dress. Again it’s poufy and the little accents like the pearl belt and the white flower really makes this dress pop and stand out.

7. Idina Menzel – The bright pinkish purple colour of this dress is what caught our attention. The pleating and big bow are nice additions to this otherwise simple strapless gown.

6. Charlize Theron - Love that slit! This dress is simple when it comes to fabric and colour but the overall design has a lot going on. Like I said that slit is amazing! The dropped shoulder strap is very different as well and that mid-section “wave” stands out. Is it a two piece? It gives that illusion. Finally that train is also something amazing making it look very regal and just stunning overall.

5. Renee Zellweger – First of all, did you see JUDY? Amazing! And so is this dress. Not everyone can pull off the one shoulder look but Renee did in this fresh white dress. That very subtle sparkle really takes the dress to the next level.

4. Mindy Kaling – We’ve chosen a yellow dress before because it’s so bright and cheerful and exudes happiness. This dress is no different. One shoulder dresses seem to be popular this year. This one shoulder dress is also an off the shoulder dress with a v neckline. It utilizes the pleated or draped look that the Idina Menzel dress did.

3. Scarlett Johansson – I love the metallic colour of this dress. It’s not quite silver, maybe it’s pewter. Whatever colour, it’s beautiful and so soft. It also looks very soft as well and the beading makes this otherwise simple dress just a little bit elaborate and over the top.

2. Regina King – There’s a lot going on with this dress, but all of it works so well together. The very light pinky peach colour is so dainty and soft and then you have a big poufy train which draws your eye to the back. The actual dress part could stand alone without the train, but it just takes it to the next level. Your eye also goes to the small single strap but then also down the bodice which is covered with some bling. The almost diagonal neckline is another element that stands out on this exciting gown.

1. Florence Pugh – Ok, so our number one pick for the best dress at this year’s Oscars is Florence Pugh’s layered teal gown. This is definitely a fun party dress. It’s got a long train with a skirt that falls at ankle length in the front; perfect for some dancing. The skirt part is layered satin teal but when it hits mid-section, there is a small teal belt before the low cut bodice with spaghetti straps. It’s a teal and satin lovers dream come true. Take a look at our teal card inspired by this beautiful gown. Enjoy it!

Oscar Dress 2020 Card:

For this teal card you will need some teal ribbon, three shades of teal cardstock, light grey cardstock, a simple small stamp, and the basics (glue tape, embossing powder, heat gun, and ink). Our inspiration is coming from the layered look of Florence Pugh’s dress.

First of all, we cut a card base out of the darkest teal shade It roughly measures 6 ½ x 5 ½ inches.

Then we used a light teal shade for the centre stripe. It measures 5 ¼ x 1 ¾ inches.

For the top and bottom stripes, we used a mid-teal shade. These stripes measure 5 ¼ x 1 ½ inches, so just slightly skinnier than the middle one.

Once those layers or stripes are glued down, then you can glue your thick teal ribbon down through the middle of the bottom strip. You can glue it the length of the card. The ribbon represents the satin aspect of the dress and also the belt element.

Now get some light grey cardstock and cut ¾ inch squares. We have a tiny stamp that says “all you need is love” which we are using. If you have some other words or a slightly bigger stamp, then you can use that; just adjust your grey square sizes accordingly. We stamped our words in black ink.

We glued the stamped square near the far end of the stripe with the ribbon and evenly spaced out the other two light grey squares. When we first started, we had all intentions on using the three squares but then we just left the card with the one square. Finally we added the other two squares becasue it needed them becasue it was missing something. 

DIY Serving Tray

Last week’s cool beverage suggestion at the end of our blog got us thinking about the next few weeks of May. Usually they are sunny and bright. There’s a holiday weekend coming up and May is the start of the season for BBQ’s, bridal showers, and backyard get togethers. We’ve decided to do a post of drinks to serve at these gatherings but first a fun and decorative way to serve them. Today we are going to show you how to decorate a tray to serve your refreshing and cool drinks on.

This is a fun and affordable way to spruce up your table and trays for your parties or get togethers. If you have an old tray that needs some TLC then use that but if you don’t, then you can pick up a plastic one (like we did) or a wooden one or even a metal one. We found our plastic one at the dollar store.

There are many different ways to decorate something like a tray but we have decided to go with Mod Podge. Our design is rather simple. We found a white plastic tray and decided to use some sparkly tissue paper and some polka dotted napkins to decorate. You can really use any colours or design; this is what we liked and thought would look nice for a Spring time serving tray.

Once you’ve picked your tray and tissue etc. you can start. Just make sure you have some Mod Podge and a paint brush or sponge brush.

So we’ve decided to put sparkly tissue up the sides of the tray and a blue polka dotted napkin on the inside of the tray.

First we measured out and cut tissue for all four sides. You’ll need two pieces per side. We left some extra length at the ends which will fold over.

Next we cut the napkins to fit. We cut the bumpy boarder off first though.

Now it’s time to Mod Podge. We started with the short sides that have the handles. We put some Mod Podge down and then laid the tissue down on and covered with more Mod Podge. You can gently brush it on so that you don’t get wrinkles, but if you do get some wrinkles, don’t worry, it adds character! It doesn’t need to be perfect. A little helpful hint...we found an old Becel container (any old smaller container or box will work) to rest the tray on. We found out that putting it down on the newspaper caused sticking and a bit of ripping.

Once you get three sides done, then allow it to dry before doing the last side. Some of the extra length tissue tore as we Mod Podged so we just ripped it off. You won’t see this as the napkins will cover the tops and you can’t see the bottom.

Repeat what you just did with another layer of tissue.

Now you have to Mod Podge the napkin. This was harder than imagined because the napkin is two layers thick and it began to tear as we applied the Mod Podge. Our plan to use a knife to cut the extra bits didn’t work so well so we ended up cutting the edges with scissors and will add a decorative ribbon piece to cover up any imperfections. We also hsve to cut out the handles holes once it's all dried too. 

The tray is all covered and will take some time to dry completely so be sure to take a look at next week’s blog where we’ll have the finished tray along with some drink recipes and drinks to serve it on it!

DIY Ornaments

Once December 1^st hits, then it’s time to put up the Christmas tree. Mine went up this weekend. Usually it’s a work in progress as the first step is putting up the tree and then the next few days and weeks, we add ornaments to it.

We thought that it might be a fun idea to make some ornaments this week. In the past we have painted ceramic and wooden shapes, but this year we thought we’d use the plastic ornaments that you can find at the craft store which open up. We’re going to open them up and fill them to decorate as well as paint them.

Again, this one is a really inexpensive craft to make with items that you can easily get at the dollar store or probably even find at home.

Painting the ornaments takes more time so you’ll want to do this further in advance if you want to give them away or hang them up. We’ve picked a variety of colours for paint to use; some are Christmasy and some are not. We also have a bunch of different sizes of brushes and some sponges as well. You can pre-sketch out some designs or you can free style it and come up with your design as you go. Do whatever you like. Here’s what we came up with...

This is a drip paint ornament. What we've done is pick a couple of matching colours and dripped them into the ornaments and moved the paint around by turning the ornaments. We did this process a few times to get all of the area covered. Then we let them hang upside down overnight to drain out the excess paint and this is what we got...

Another option to is to fill the ornaments with curled ribbons, shredded snow, larger glitter bits, small punched shapes, or coloured paper or paper from old books so that you can see the words.

For both, you can put ribbons/bows on the outside to adorn the finished ornaments.  

Now you can hang them up in your tree or around your house or you can make a bunch and hand them out as gift this year.
