Oscar Dress Card 2021 Part 1

Alright, it’s finally Oscar dress card time. The Oscars were defiantly a lower key type of situation this year and they should be due to COVID, but those who attended still had some gorgeous outfits that inspired us to create a beautiful and vibrant 2021 Oscar card. This year we are doing things kind of different. We’ll be doing our top 10 countdown today but you’ll have to stay tuned for next week’s Oscar card tutorial and reveal! Here are our top 10 outfits (in no particular order except for our number one choice).

Zendaya – Yellow and bright colours seem to be big this year. After a very dull and sad year, it was nice to see all this brightness and happiness. It’s not just yellow, it’s neon yellow so there was no way to not notice it.

Regina King- This dress may not be for everyone but for some reason I was drawn to it. The silk and the sparkly stripes worked together. The shoulders and sleeves may seem a bit too much for some, but overall it was a very pretty dress.

Margot Robbie- Print...this dress reminded me of the 90s. I may have even had a dress similar to this. The version that Margot Robbie wore was elevated. It had a simpleness to it but it also seemed very glamourous and sophisticated.

Amanda Seyfried – Red and poofy! This gown was something else. Not everyone can pull off such a big gown but it was perfect for Amanda Seyfried and it just caught your eye. The deep V and all of the rouching took it to the next level.

Colman Domingo- Pink and sparkly, this suit is so cheerful and bright. It really stood out and not in a bad way. It has just the right amount of glamour and pizzazz and I loved it.

Leslie Odom Jr.- Anything that includes gold stands out to me and this was no exception. The suit had more of a muted matte gold look so it wasn’t too much.

Halle Berry-This gown was very pretty. I think that is the best word to describe it. It was a shade of pink that you don’t see too often; it was soft and calming. It had so many little outstanding elements like the bow on the front, the layering, the soft sweet color, and the beautiful bodice.

Viola Davis- The white gown that Viola Davis had on was gorgeous. The cutout design at the top complimented the flowy simple bottom. Very elegant.

Carey Mulligan – Ok, so I was torn between this gown and the one I chose as number for the top pick and Oscar card; both are very different from each other. I loved this colour. It was more of a metallic yellow than gold. It’s not one that everyone can pull off, I couldn’t, but again it just exudes this happiness and cheerfulness because of its brightness. I also loved the cutout and the wide poof of the skirt.

Vanessa Kirby- As my number one choice I picked Vanessa Kirby’s gown. It is very simple, but I found it so elegant and the soft blush colour makes for a classic. The small cutout on the bodice, backless element, and the train worked to further the elegance. It reminds me of something that Audrey Hepburn would wear.

There you have our top 10 Oscar outfits. See you next week with our card inspired by Vanessa Kirby's 2021 Oscar gown.

Candy Cane Crafts

Ok, so we are a little under a week away until Christmas. Up this week we have a Christmas favourite, the candy cane! We have some fun candy cane crafts for you but first a little history on this yummy sweet treat.

The candy cane first originated in Cologne, Germany when a choirmaster at a cathedral wanted all the children there to be quiet during a Christmas Eve ceremony. He asked a local candy maker to create a treat for these children to help them stay quiet and he came up with the candy cane. Candy canes are typically white with red stripes and have a peppermint flavour but now you’ll see all sorts of flavours and colourings. The first candy canes were made by hand and eventually a Chicago based company patented the candy cane shape in the early 1920’s and machines started making them.

We’re not making candy canes this week in a cooking sense; we are making them in a craft sense.

Check out the two fun and easy Christmas candy cane crafts that we tried out...

Twine Wrapped Candy Canes

These are super easy.

All you need is a candy cane or two (depends on how many of these decorations you want to make) some twine, hot glue, and ribbon.

Start by gluing the bottom of the candy cane and start wrapping with twine. Periodically put some glue on the candy cane as you wrap it. Eventually you’ll have a fully twine wrapped candy cane.

Add a twine or ribbon bow to the top along with a twine hoop for hanging.

Paper Candy Canes

This is another fun and simple craft.

For this one you’ll need markers, paper, a ruler, scissors, and tape.

First thing you’ll need to do is cut the paper into a square.

Then draw lines around two edges in varying widths and colours. Most we did were four to five lines or you can do three to six. We used a ruler as we wanted straighter lines.

Next turn the paper over and starting on the corner with no lines, start to roll the paper.

Once it’s all rolled up, tape the last corner down. You’ll have a candy stick now.

To turn it onto a candy cane, while flattening as you go, curl over one end with your finger or a fatter marker and manipulate it to a hook end.

Trim the end of the curled end.

Hang them up or display them through your house for the holidays!

Wedding Cake Card

It’s wedding season, well at least near the end of wedding season and we have a fun and easy wedding cake card that is inspired by the Brusters Wedding Cake ice cream flavour. We have made a similar card like this in the past but have never blogged about it. We’re making two versions, a simple rustic one and one that’s more elegant and colourful. You don’t need fancy machines for this card and you don’t even need to stamp!

Gather some supplies to get started. You’ll need some cardstock. For our rustic card, we’ve gone with a cream coloured “cake” and greens and red for the rest of the card. For the more elegant card, we chose a white “cake” and then blue and a pinky purple colour.

We’ve cut the cards to the usual 6 ¾ x 4 ¾ inch size.

Then we have layers measuring 6 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches.

Then we cut out our cake tiers. The top is 1 ½ x 2, the middle is 2 ¼ x 2 ¼, and the bottom tier is 3 ¼ x 2. If you have a machine like a Silhouette then feel free to use it to do your cutting.

Next we glued the layers on overlapping them while doing so and then glued that layer onto our cards.

Lastly, to elevate the cards a bit, we added some embellishments. Feel free to make it as elaborate as you want and you can add some stamping, ribbon, embellishments, etc. whatever you like. We started with ribbon on both.

On the more elegant colourful card we added a bow topper on top along with simple white sparkly flower embellishments.

On our rustic simple card we added a ribbon bow on top and matching thin brown ribbon between the tiers of the cake. We left it at that to keep it simple as possible but it still has a finished feel.

There you have it, two really simple to make wedding cake cards.
