Oscar Dress Card Part Two

Welcome to Oscar dress card tutorial day. Last week we counted down our favourite Oscar outfits and we picked Vanessa Kirby’s light pink elegant gown as our #1 choice. Today we will unveil our card inspired by this gown and the steps to make it. Take a look…

First of all I went through all of the pink cardstock and picked out a couple lighter shades.

I used a darker shade as the base/card measuring 4 ¾ x 6 ¾ inches.

Next I cut a larger layer 4 ½ x 6 ½ inches to go onto the card front. It was the lightest shade of pink almost similar to the colour of the actual gown.

Then I chose a pink shade in-between the two and I cut two 1 ¼ inch wide strips the length of the sheet of cardstock.

I glued those strips down onto the light layer from diagonal corner to diagonal corner forming almost an X or what reminded me of the deep V neck on the dress. I then trimmed the strips to fit onto the card.

Then I glued this layer onto the card front.

Now I cut two more layers. One is a sparkly silver layer (2 ½ x 2 ¾  inches) representing the simple necklace that complimented the gown and then a smaller white layer (2 ½ x 2 inches) for stamping.

I stamped the white layer with a simple word “Happy” and I did this in red ink and embossed it. I wanted to really tie the entire Oscar look into the card so I incorporated her red lips and nails by stamping in red.

Then I glued the white layer off center onto the silver layer.

I put a foam piece on the back and then attached that to the center of the card covering where the two strips of pink come together in the middle.

And there you have our 2021 Oscar dress card!

Oscar Dress Card 2020

It is that time once again...it’s Oscar dress card time! We absolutely love this post every single year. I’m watching the Oscars now more to look at the dresses and to pick our top ones to make a card from! After looking through many many dresses, take a look at our top 10 and then take a look at the dress we chose to inspire a card this year!

10. Brie Larson - We’re starting with sparkle here. Brie Larson seems to always make our list (her blue Oscar dress a few years back was chosen for our Oscar card  (http://paperwhitecreations.blogspot.com/2016/03/oscar-dresses-and-card.html) and this year is no different. The cape, the sparkle stripes, and the slit all makes for a perfect gown. Even the pale pink colour is perfect!

9.  Greta Gerwig – Simple and poufy, this dress is just enough. The olive green colour is something that is also very different and helps to make this dress stand out. The quaint little bow on the bodice is a perfect little detail as well.

8. Penelope Cruz – We liked this short little black high-low dress. Again it’s poufy and the little accents like the pearl belt and the white flower really makes this dress pop and stand out.

7. Idina Menzel – The bright pinkish purple colour of this dress is what caught our attention. The pleating and big bow are nice additions to this otherwise simple strapless gown.

6. Charlize Theron - Love that slit! This dress is simple when it comes to fabric and colour but the overall design has a lot going on. Like I said that slit is amazing! The dropped shoulder strap is very different as well and that mid-section “wave” stands out. Is it a two piece? It gives that illusion. Finally that train is also something amazing making it look very regal and just stunning overall.

5. Renee Zellweger – First of all, did you see JUDY? Amazing! And so is this dress. Not everyone can pull off the one shoulder look but Renee did in this fresh white dress. That very subtle sparkle really takes the dress to the next level.

4. Mindy Kaling – We’ve chosen a yellow dress before because it’s so bright and cheerful and exudes happiness. This dress is no different. One shoulder dresses seem to be popular this year. This one shoulder dress is also an off the shoulder dress with a v neckline. It utilizes the pleated or draped look that the Idina Menzel dress did.

3. Scarlett Johansson – I love the metallic colour of this dress. It’s not quite silver, maybe it’s pewter. Whatever colour, it’s beautiful and so soft. It also looks very soft as well and the beading makes this otherwise simple dress just a little bit elaborate and over the top.

2. Regina King – There’s a lot going on with this dress, but all of it works so well together. The very light pinky peach colour is so dainty and soft and then you have a big poufy train which draws your eye to the back. The actual dress part could stand alone without the train, but it just takes it to the next level. Your eye also goes to the small single strap but then also down the bodice which is covered with some bling. The almost diagonal neckline is another element that stands out on this exciting gown.

1. Florence Pugh – Ok, so our number one pick for the best dress at this year’s Oscars is Florence Pugh’s layered teal gown. This is definitely a fun party dress. It’s got a long train with a skirt that falls at ankle length in the front; perfect for some dancing. The skirt part is layered satin teal but when it hits mid-section, there is a small teal belt before the low cut bodice with spaghetti straps. It’s a teal and satin lovers dream come true. Oscar Dress 2020 Card:

For this teal card you will need some teal ribbon, three shades of teal cardstock, light grey cardstock, a simple small stamp, and the basics (glue tape, embossing powder, heat gun, and ink). Our inspiration is coming from the layered look of Florence Pugh’s dress.

First of all, we cut a card base out of the darkest teal shade It roughly measures 6 ½ x 5 ½ inches.

Then we used a light teal shade for the centre stripe. It measures 5 ¼ x 1 ¾ inches.

For the top and bottom stripes, we used a mid-teal shade. These stripes measure 5 ¼ x 1 ½ inches, so just slightly skinnier than the middle one.

Once those layers or stripes are glued down, then you can glue your thick teal ribbon down through the middle of the bottom strip. You can glue it the length of the card. The ribbon represents the satin aspect of the dress and also the belt element.

Now get some light grey cardstock and cut ¾ inch squares. We have a tiny stamp that says “all you need is love” which we are using. If you have some other words or a slightly bigger stamp, then you can use that; just adjust your grey square sizes accordingly. We stamped our words in black ink.

We glued the stamped square near the far end of the stripe with the ribbon and evenly spaced out the other two light grey squares. When we first started, we had all intentions on using the three squares but then we just left the card with the one square. Finally we added the other two squares becasue it needed them becasue it was missing something. 

Monkey Puppet

So this week’s flavour is a very modern and untraditional ice cream flavour, the flavour is “Monkey Madness” by Brusters. The main ice cream flavour is banana which makes sense because monkeys and bananas are often associated. Stirred into that banana ice cream base are marshmallows and a candy called Buckeyes (which are a peanut butter fudge ball partially dipped in chocolate). If you’re a peanut butter and banana fan than this flavour is for you!

We’re not going to make anything with those ingredients, instead, we are going to make a monkey inspired craft. We thought a fun little kid craft to make would be monkey puppets. They’re really simple and would be a perfect activity to do when your child has over some of their new friends from school (since school started up this week).

So gather up the following...regular brown paper bags, some cardstock for the monkey parts (light pink, dark brown, lighter brown/beige, cream, and black), glue, scissors, a pencil, and “monkey parts.”

First of all you want to figure out how you are going to make the parts of the monkey. We have found a template here and printed that off and then cut it out and traced it on our cardstock. You can freehand drawing a monkey or use a cutting device like a Silhouette if you have.

Trace the inside of the ears in pink, the head and ears dark brown, the body, nose, and mouth in the light brown, around the eyes in cream, and the pupils in black.

Once you have all of the parts, you can start gluing them on/together.

Glue the eyes onto the cream eye piece. Then glue the inside of the ears onto the ears and the big eye piece onto the face and then to complete the face, glue the ears onto the head.

Next you can glue the head onto the flap of the bag and then the body just underneath the head. Now glue the nose on the flap so it partially covers the eye piece (draw on the nostrils before gluing) and the mouth part just under it. Finally glue the tail on the back of the paper bag near the bottom.

We took a look at our finished product and noticed that something was missing...a tongue! When you open up your little monkey puppet’s mouth it just seemed too empty so we cut a tongue out of red cardstock and then added a line down the middle to make it look like a tongue.

Now it’s done!

DIY Paper Heart Wreath

Happy Groundhog Day. I guess we should’ve made a card with a cute little groundhog on it. Oh well. We are still in the Valentine mood and this week we’ve come up with a fairly easy and super cute decoration that you can spruce your house, bedroom, or classroom up with this Valentine season.

We are going to show you how to make a heart wreath. It’s a very simple craft to do. All you need is some cardboard (or a paper plate), cardstock, patterned paper (optional), glue, something heart shaped to trace (you can use a cutting device if you have one, like a Silhouette), and some string or ribbon.

If you have some sturdy cardboard, you can cut out a ring for the wreath base. Ours is a 12 inch circle on the outside and the inside circle is about 9 inches. You can also use a paper plate as your base if you have one of the more flimsy paper plates. Using the really thick ones won’t allow you to flatten it down so that you can stick the hearts on. We tried! If you want to get even more Valentiney, you can cut a heart out of cardboard as your base and you will have a heart shaped heart wreath.

Next up we cut out a variety of different coloured hearts in a variety of sizes. We used Nicole’s Silhouette and a punch, but you can also find some different sized hearts to trace yourself and then cut out. Cookie cutters are always easy and good to cut out. You can also find templates online as well.

Another thing you can do, is cut hearts out of patterned paper. We are going with a red, white, and pink theme and have found patterned paper to match with that but you can do really whatever colours you want.

The amount of hearts all depends on the size of the wreath, but also on how full you want it to look. We just picked out a bunch of paper and cut a bunch of hearts until we used some of all the paper we chose. It’s better to have too many hearts than to have not enough and then have to cut more.

Start laying out the hearts on the wreath as you cut them that will also give you a better idea of how many you need to cut. Also, it might be a good idea once you’ve laid the hearts out as you want to take a picture so you can refer back to it while you glue.

We are going to use a couple of gluing methods. Some we are going to glue down with our glue tape; they will be more of the base hearts and as we build up on that base, we’ll glue some down with the glue tape and also use a glue gun to make some of the hearts 3D.

After you’ve got all the hearts just where you want them, attach some string, fishing wire, or ribbon to the top so that you can hang your wreath up for all to see and enjoy.
