Key/Change Holder Dish

In keeping with the key ring theme, we are making key/change “dishes” as a gift that you can give dad for Father’s Day. They come in quite handy. You can also use these dishes to hold jewelry or little knick knacks.

You can make these dishes from lots of different things. We are going with ceramic dishes and we are using a very cool technique to decorate them.

You don’t need very many things to create this cool little gift. All you need is some nail polish (your choice what colours you’d like to use; we went with blues), a big plastic tub filled with warm water so you can dunk your dish, and a ceramic dish of some sort (we found a couple at the dollar store).

First of all prepare your work area and put some newspapers down. You might want to have some paper towels and some nail polish remover with cotton pads on stand by. You may also want to wear some latex gloves to protect your hands.

Fill a tub, big enough to dunk the dishes that you have selected, with warmer water.

First we drizzled the nail polish on the surface of the water, swirling it around to make a cool pattern.

Then we dipped the ceramic plate (we also made a little bowl) in slowly and the nail polish will stick to the plate. Don't wait too long after drizzling the nail polish to dip. It may start drying.

Once you have the plate etc. looking as you want it, find a good place to let it dry for a couple of days.

You don’t have to do this last step, but we used a protectant spray to keep our polish sealed on the plate.

DIY Father's Day Gifts

As Father’s Day approaches, we are going to focus on dad for the next few blog posts. This week we are looking into some fun DIY gifts that you can make for your dad sort of like how we did our DIY Mother’s Day Spa day but a little different.

So take a look below at some of the gifts and how to make them...

Infused Vodka

For the much older children that want to make their Father a refreshing treat, these fruit infused Vodka drinks are a good idea.

Map Coasters

This one is good if you have old maps especially ones from places that you've visited with you dad.

Dancing Family Cut-Outs

This one is definitely unique and different. Younger kids may need some help to make this one.

DIY Watercolour Mug

Again this one requires an adult’s help, but it’s something really cool that dad can have his coffee out of every morning.

Popcorn Sampler

If your dad likes to snack on popcorn like mine does, then putting together a few decorated containers of flavoured popcorn might be a fun and easy gift to make him. Check out the link for some recipes and ideas for your popcorn sampler.

Tie Glasses Case

This one seems really easy and I think it’s quite an inventive gift.

Mason Jar Lid Coaster

I don’t know why there are so many dad related coaster DIY’s out there but we’ve seen a few and they all are quite clever.

Pre-Shave Oil

I like the idea of this one. I’m always into the bath and body stuff. This one is perfect for dad.

Vinyl Record Bowl

I never thought about using records this way. It’s probably a good idea to go to  the thrift store and get some records that you don’t’ want to listen to gain. Dad won’t be impressed if you use his favourite record to make him a bowl.

Phone Case Decorating

Markers and tape that’s all you need for this simple gift for dad. Most dads have a cell phone so it’s a sure fire gift that will please any dad.

Father’s Day Notepad

This one is easy for little kids to do. Just get them a notepad cube and let them decorate it for dad to use or display on his desk.

Soda Can Coasters

Nicole is really loving the DIY coasters this week. This one can be a bit dangerous because you are going to be cutting tin so make sure there is an adult on hand to help the kids.
